Olivem®1000 Crystal Skin™ has the ability to generate liquid crystal structures that mimic the stratum corneum extracellular lipid matrix tridimensional organization.

Those liquid crystals present a molecular structure close to that observed in the lipid lamellae of the stratum corneum. Indeed, the walls of the liquid crystals are formed of alternating layers of fatty acids and water thereby mimicking the stratum corneum intercellular lipid matrix structure (Norlén, 2001).

The biomimetism of Olivem®1000 Crystal Skin™ is thereby twofold:
1. a chemical mimicry with the skin surface lipid composition
2. a structural mimicry with the stratum corneum intercellular lipid lamellar organization.

The ultrastructure of the liquid crystals mimics the molecular organization of the stratum corneum intercellular lipid lamellae. The liquid crystals thus formed can physiologically integrate into the skin lipid barrier and reinforce its integrity.
